What is Digital Game Based Learning?

Digital game-based learning, refers to the use of digital games as a key component of disseminating educational subject matter. It provides learning stimulus beyond traditional learning methodologies such as textbook, manual, or classroom-based instruction. Digital game- based learning can offer user-friendly solutions and entertainment while satisfying education requirements. Instead of limiting students to reading printed manuals and listening to lectures that provide traditional methods of interaction, students are able to acquire knowledge and skills through simulations and virtual interactions that are much more conducive to actual first hand experiences. There has been a lot of research conducted on digital game-based learning and gamification. This phenomenon provides the opportunity for video games to be designed to facilitate learning. The results of the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (“PISA”) showed that fifteen- year-old U.S. students rank near the average in science (20th) among the 34 highly developed countries that are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. These deficiencies outline a need for new educational technologies that will provide a resource that will reinforce learning consequently producing high scores on lecture test and assessments. Our objective is to develop new educational interactive media resources that will advance the understanding of how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (“STEM”) based gaming can improve student learning. BENEFITS OF DIGITAL GAME-BASED LEARNING: Digital game-based learning could help facilitate: 1. An interactive means of relating and reinforcing relevant lecture content that is not provided by pamphlets, textbooks, handouts, and similar forms media. 2. Children’s cognitive development, which is important during early childhood development years. 3. Children’s Information and Communication Technologies (“ICT”) development, which is equivalently important during early childhood development years. 4. Children’s higher-order thinking skills. 5. Children's motivation to engage in ongoing skills development and practice activities. 6. Learning for students who have trouble learning within the formal classroom, and needs an alternate learning method in order to succeed. 7. Learning for students who need to personally experience the value of a subjects and skills in order to be motivated to learn. 8. Differentiated learning, particularly for those who need support in science and mathematics.
